Happy Holidays!

The college is closed December 21 through January 1 for winter break and will reopen January 2. Prospective students can still apply for enrollment online during the break, and continuing students can register for Spring semester classes.

Nurse Aide Refresher Syllabus

The Nurse Aide I Refresher course consists of a brief review of the Nurse Aide I curriculum and the competency exam required for listing as a Nurse Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.

The class consists of 48 hours of theory and skills review and return demonstration of skills.

  • Review of Residents Rights (Module E), recognition of mental health and social service needs (Module S and Module U) and care of cognitively impaired residents (Module R)
  • Administration of NNAAP Practice Exam. Students must score 78 or higher.
  • Demonstration and return demonstration of starred skills on the Skill Performance Checklists Summary

If the student accumulates more than 4.8 hours of absences (10%), tardy, or early departures, he or she will be exited from the class and receive a grade of "NG." No make-up time will be arranged.

NOTE: The first and last days of class area mandatory.

  • Students will be considered tardy one minute after the seated in-person class or lab starts.
  • Absences will not be considered "excused" or "unexcused." Failure to be in class for any reason is considered an absence.
  • There are no provisions to retake a partial portion of the class or to transfer to another class beyond the 10% date of the class.

Grading

  • Students must pass the written exam with a score of 78 or higher to progress.
  • Students must successfully demonstrate, without prompting or coaching, the starred skills. The student will be given up to two attempts per day to pass the skills being checked off that day, as time permits.

Class and lab conduct

  • Mature manner and full participation is expected in all lab activities, including being the patient, assisting with setting up the lab and taking down the labs.
  • Fingernails must be short to participate in lab.
  • Modest clothing must be worn.
  • No eating or drinking allowed in lab.
  • No cellphones allowed.
  • No children allowed on campus.

The following unprofessional or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and may result in automatic dismissal from the program:

  • Disrespectful, interruptive, disruptive or impatient behavior toward instructors, fellow students, staff or clinical staff
  • Inappropriate reactions at any time
  • If the instructor suspects that you are a safety risk in class due to a physical or behavior action or issue
  • Cheating, suspected use of alcohol or drugs on campus or before class
  • Fighting, the use of profanity or demonstrating an attitude that would frighten a person such as a loud, raised, angry voice

If dismissal occurs for any reason, you are not eligible for a refund.

In order to be placed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry, the following must be completed:

  • Candidates must pass the written and skill portion of the NNAAP exam within two years from the completion date of a refresher course.
  • If a candidate has three unsuccessful attempts within a two-year period, he or she is not eligible to take a refresher course and must retake an accredited Nurse Aide I course.
