About the Artist

Mary D. Williams has performed at the United States Congress, at the North Carolina State Capital, and for Civil Rights symposiums in Montpelier, France. She has visited hundreds of colleges, universities, and other public institutions and performs benefit concerts for incarcerated men, cancer patients, and victims of domestic violence and homelessness. She is an adjunct professor at the Duke Center for Documentary Studies and Wake Technical Community College.

Her performance will give understanding to the role music played from enslavement through the Civil Rights Movement, illustrating how music provides an effective
entry point for uniting us as we examine history. Listen to Mrs. Williams on NPR or read about her work in Walter Magazine.
