Automotive Advanced Air Conditioning Diagnostics

This course focuses on diagnosing automotive air conditioning. We will cover refrigerant flow & types of compressors. Classroom time will include review of wiring diagrams of control circuits, researching specs and procedures. Lab time will include hands-on practice with vehicles, using multi-meters, scan tools, and Recovery, Recycling, and Recharging equipment. Students should learn strategies to cut diagnostic time and improve accuracy towards Fixed Right the First Time. Students should take this course AFTER completing EPA 609.

Course Objectives

Identify the major components of all A/C systems

Identify the type of compressor used on an individual vehicle

Identify the sensors and control components used on an individual vehicle

Diagnose mechanical issues with the use of pressure gauges

Use a scan tool to observe appropriate data

Narrow the problem down to the root cause

Outline of Instruction

Refrigeration Cycle (Movement of heat, components – compressor, condenser, evaporator, lines – refrigerant R134a/R1234YF, Section 609 regulations and TXV vs. CCOT systems)

Compressors (Identify the type – clutch driven, variable displacement, high-voltage/three-phase – and compressor controls – use wiring diagram to find clutch coil fuses/relays, find variable displacement solenoids on diagram and command compressor function with scan tool)

Electronics and Controls (Find temperature and pressure sensor data in scan tool, test temperature and pressure sensors with multimeter, study relays in a "divide and conquer" diagnostic strategy and test cooling/condenser fan circuits, command with scan tool)

RRR/Gauges (Connect and read gauges, verify refrigerant charge level, identify normal operation and identify causes of abnormal readings)
