Wake Tech Firsts
Wake Tech Online Ranks #1 in the Nation
Wake Tech was recognized as the #1 online community college in the nation by Best Value Schools (BVS). BVS, a college search guide for students, ranked Wake Tech number one for its “overall variety, affordability, and quality.” BVS was impressed with both the quantity and variety of Wake Tech’s online programs, and its low tuition and strong retention and graduation rates got high marks as well. BVS evaluated 1,100 community colleges nationwide to find which offer the best value. They ranked the colleges based on the number of online degree, certificate, and diploma programs offered. They identified one college in each state and assigned points for program selection, retention rate, graduation rate, and annual cost. Wake Tech scored 100! Data came from the IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), the College Navigator database, plus official college websites.
A New Name for Wake Tech’s Oldest Campus
What’s in a name?! Wake Tech’s Main Campus, where the college first opened its doors in 1963, is now called the Southern Wake Campus – to better reflect its place among Wake Tech’s five campus locations. “We’ve grown so rapidly,” says Wake Tech Vice President Laurie Clowers, “and we’re truly a multi-campus college now, with programs and services throughout the county. This change is a milestone in Wake Tech’s 54-year history. The college opened as the W.W. Holding Industrial Education Center in 1963, with one building and 35 students in four programs. It became “Main Campus” when the Health Sciences campus opened in 1972. Wake Tech has grown to become the largest of the state’s 58 community colleges, serving nearly 74,000 students each year.
Health and Fitness Science Program Earns Coveted Accreditation
Wake Tech’s Health and Fitness Science program earned accreditation from CAAHEP, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs – the first community college program in the state (and the fourth in the nation) to do so! CAAHEP has recognized the program’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers in the fitness and exercise industry.
Wake Tech Offers First Computer Technologies Boot Camp
For the first time, Wake Tech began offering a 15-week training course in computer coding languages. Web Developer Coding Boot Camp is offered through Wake Tech’s non-credit Workforce Continuing Education division. Students get hands-on training in the coding languages in greatest demand in the IT industry. They work in a computer lab with software and hardware provided, create a digital portfolio for prospective employers, and enjoy a variety of networking opportunities.

In February of 2018, Dr. Stephen C. Scott announced his retirement, effective
August 31, 2018. With a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Scott has
been at the helm of Wake Tech since October 2003. Under his leadership, Wake
Tech has become the largest of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges, and
has consistently ranked among the fastest-growing community colleges in the
United States.
“It has been an honor to lead this great institution,” Dr. Scott said. “It is filled
with passionate faculty, innovative staff, and the hardest-working students I
have ever known. As I move forward with this next phase of my life, I am
confident that Wake Tech will continue to change lives.”
Dr. Scott is Wake Tech’s third president. In 2008, he was named NCCCS
President of the Year by the NC Board of Community Colleges. He received the
2008 Business Leader of the Year Award from Business Leader magazine and
the 2009 I.E. Ready Award from the NCSU Department of Adult and Higher
Education. In 2012, Triangle Business Journal named him one of the 100 Most
Influential Business Persons in the Triangle, and in 2016 TBJ named him a CEO
of the Year. His legacy at Wake Tech includes Applied Benchmarking, a
continuous improvement initiative in which all employees research best
practices at other institutions and apply them at Wake Tech. Applied
Benchmarking won the prestigious Bellwether Award from the Community
College Futures Assembly in 2014.
“When I started here 15 years ago, I saw a college full of promise, ready to grow
by leaps and bounds – and it has done just that,” says Dr. Scott. “It has been
rewarding and exhilarating to be a part of that growth and the fulfillment of
that promise.”
Wake Tech celebrated the college’s second largest gift ever, with a dedication ceremony at
the Perry Health Sciences Campus. Martha Mann Smith, a retired nurse from Apex, donated
$1 million to Wake Tech’s nursing program. The program was renamed in her honor, as college
leaders dedicated the Martha Mann Smith School of Nursing. Wake Tech is the first community
college in the state to have a nursing school. The funds will be permanently endowed to support
student scholarships, technology upgrades, and faculty professional development.
“Our nursing program is one of the jewels here at Wake Tech,” said Wake Tech president Dr. Stephen
Scott. “Martha’s generous gift will make a difference in the lives of hundreds of nursing students and
tens of thousands of patients and families.”
College leaders also took Mrs. Smith on a tour of the state-of-the-art nursing simulation suite, the
centerpiece of Wake Tech’s nursing program. The program prepares excellent, well-qualified nurses
who can practice in a variety of settings. Ninety-seven percent of nursing graduates pass state boards;
98% are employed within six months.
Dozens of business leaders came to Wake Tech’s RTP Campus for a preview of the new location.
“This place is really special,” said Wake Tech Board of Trustees Chair Tom Looney. “I’m a believer, and you should be a believer, too!”
Looney joined Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott, Chief Campus Officer Dr. Rita Jerman and other Wake Tech staff and faculty in welcoming the
group. They talked about the programs being offered there, including three of the fastest-growing IT programs at Wake Tech: Networking, Cybersecurity,
and Business Analytics, and high-demand programs such as Supply Chain Management and Business Administration.
“This campus was designed with the needs of business and industry in mind,” said Dr. Scott. “Local companies provided input on the types of training
they’re looking for, and we’re delivering with high-quality programs that will ensure a skilled workforce.”
Business leaders took a tour of the building, which includes high-tech computer labs, state-of-the-art science labs, and an expansive library and learning
commons. The first phase of the RTP Campus will accommodate as many as 1,000 students. Eventually, the campus will have nine buildings, and serve
7,000 students or more.

Dr. Gayle Greene
Executive Vice President
Dr. Gayle Greene was selected as this year’s recipient of NC State University’s Higher Education Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Greene received her Doctor of Education from the NC State Higher Education program in 1998, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She has been at Wake Tech for 16 years.
Laurie Clowers
VP of Communications and Marketing
Laurie Clowers was selected for Leadership North Carolina (LNC), the prestigious leadership engagement program. Each year, LNC chooses a class of leaders who study the state’s critical issues and then develop action plans for improving their communities. VP Clowers has worked at Wake Tech for more than 10 years. She oversees all internal and external communications for the college, including marketing, public relations and digital communications.
Kai Wang
Senior Dean of Strategic Innovations
The North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges named Dr. Kai Wang Staff of the Year for 2018. Dr. Wang joined Wake Tech in 2002 as an adjunct instructor and went on to serve as a department head and as dean of special projects. Dr. Wang also serves as Chief Campus Officer for Wake Tech’s “virtual campus,” Wake Tech Online, and was a driving force in the creation of Wake Tech’s Simulation and Game Development Program.
Dr. John Boone
Dean, Institutional Effectiveness, Accreditation & Research
Dr. John Boone was presented with Wake Tech’s first Honorary Alumnus Award, a special designation reserved for those who truly embody the spirit of the institution. Dr. Boone has served the college for more than 30 years in a variety of capacities. He is most notably known for leading Wake Tech through its most recent re-accreditation. In addition to his steadfast dedication to the college’s mission and his loyalty to his colleagues, Dr. Boone has been a long-time supporter of the Foundation. He made his first gift in 1988, making him the longest consecutive giver on record.

Director of Entrepreneurship Initiatives
Katie Gailes received one of the 2018 Triangle Business Journal Women in Business awards. Gailes was one of 25 winners honored at an event in Cary, and was selected for her role as a “behind the scenes leader.” Each winner was asked to share advice she would give to her 21-year-old self. Gailes advised to, “Take more risks. Be bold!”
Alumni Judge Paul Gessner
Retired North Carolina Superior Court Judge
Retired North Carolina Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner was honored with a place in Wake Tech’s Criminal Justice Wall of Fame. Judge Gessner ruled in high-profile lawsuits and felony cases while on the bench and was recognized as one of the state’s most powerful trial judges. He began his career as a Raleigh police officer; after earning an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Wake Tech. He says Wake Tech provided a foundation for his career path and contributed significantly to his success. Judge Gessner has supported Wake Tech students, faculty, and staff in a variety of ways for many years, sharing his time and resources. He has served as an adjunct instructor in the Criminal Justice program, helping students make connections between their education and the community they are preparing to serve.

Wake Tech Announces Flexible
New Way to Earn Degrees
Wake Tech proudly announced a flexible new way to earn IT degrees. “Wake Tech Flex” an innovative competency-based education initiative offered in two Computer Technologies degree programs: Software Development and Network Management. Competency-based education is a learning model that allows students to get credit for what they already know, progress at their own pace, and demonstrate to employers that they have mastered all of the material in their degree. “As a ‘Future-Forward College,’ we’re excited to lead the way with Wake Tech Flex,” says President Dr. Stephen Scott. “It’s a new way of earning a degree, unlike traditional college programs you’ve experienced in the past!” Wake Tech is one of four North Carolina community colleges offering a competency-based education program.

Each year, the Instructional Technology Council (ITC) selects a winner based on outstanding and innovative teaching and classroom management strategies with course success and excellent student retention. Alison Consol, Professor/Program Director, Web Technology, Advertising, and Graphic Design was selected to receive the 2018 Award for Outstanding eLearning Faculty from the ITC.

Exemplary Course Award
The team of Dr. Chris Roddenberry, Associate Professor of Psychology, Shelley Evans, Instructional Designer, and Cynthia Bowers, Instructional Technologist, were named winners in Blackboard’s Exemplary Course Program (ECP). The awards program recognizes faculty and course designers from schools, colleges, and universities around the world who develop engaging and innovative courses that represent the very best in technology and learning. The team won for their course “General Psychology.” The course demonstrated excellence in course design, interaction and collaboration, assessment, and learner support.

Jeffrey Robinson
Jeffrey Robinson was named Dean
and Chief Campus Officer of the Public Safety Education Campus. Robinson is responsible for daily operations at the campus and oversees its budget. Prior to this appointment, Robinson served
as Director of Wake Tech’s Law Enforcement Training for the college. Robinson has 29 years of experience as a law enforcement officers well as 20 years of community college experience, serving as an instructor and a director of public safety training. He is a certified EMT and a veteran of the
U.S. Marine Corps.
Jerry Guerrier
Jerry Guerrier was named Director of Design and Construction. Jerry brings more than 25 years of experience in design, construction, and project administration to the college’s leadership team. He oversees planning, design, and construction on all capital improvement projects, including new buildings, repairs and renovations, and campus infrastructure. Prior to coming to Wake Tech, Guerrier held several leadership positions at UNC-Chapel Hill, including Assistant Director for Facilities Planning and Design.

SCOTT SCHOLAR
Aaron Ruff has been named the 2017 Scott Scholar. He received up to $3,500 for tuition, fees and books along with a laptop computer, a summer internship placement, and a mentor from senior administration. He will also have regular one-on-one sessions with Wake Tech’s President. The Scott scholarship is Wake Tech’s most prestigious and sought-after distinction. “I'm overwhelmed!” Ruff says, “This scholarship will help relieve some of the financial burdens that come with investing in my future.” “Aaron exemplifies the commitment and achievement our Scott Scholars program was created to reward,” Dr. Scott said.
FROM MILITARY TO COLLEGE
Student veterans served as panelists for a UNC-TV livestreamed program. The NC Veterans Coffee was a chance to hear from student veterans on the challenges they faced after serving in the military, and what it was like to enroll in college. The event was held on the Southern Wake Campus. It was sponsored by Wake Tech’s Military and Veterans Programs, in partnership with UNC-TV and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Several of the panelists told host Jeff Smith that enrolling in college was daunting after military service, but they found help at Wake Tech through the college’s Military and Veterans Resource Center.
StartUp@WakeTech
Students in Wake Tech’s Advertising and Graphic Design program presented a portfolio of branding and design projects they had worked on throughout the semester for their real-life business clients. The students were a part of StartUp@WakeTech, an in-class entrepreneurial initiative that pairs Wake Tech students with local small business owners on actual projects. Five business owners pitched their branding needs to the students, and became class “clients” for the semester. The students come away with a hard-earned design portfolio and hands-on experience in a mock advertising agency setting, while the business clients ended up with new branding at no cost.
BEATING THE ODDS
A former foster child celebrated a major milestone at Wake Tech’s spring 2018 Commencement Exercises. Shana Hilliard received an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Early Childhood Development. Hilliard, who was in foster care during her teens, received support from Wake Tech’s Fostering Bright Futures program. The program provides tutoring, mentoring, and financial support to help former foster youth pursue higher education. Shana Hilliard is the program’s eleventh student to successfully complete a program at Wake Tech. “Fostering Bright Futures provided support and motivation. There is always someone in your corner saying ‘you got this’. I don’t think I would have been able to graduate without them!” says Shana.
ACADEMIC HONORS
For the fall 2017 semester, 218 students earned a place on the President’s List (GPA of 4.0 or higher) and 160 for Dean’s List (GPA 3.5 or higher). In spring 2018, 679 students made the President’s List and 903 made the Dean’s List.
COMMENCEMENT
Nearly 800 fall 2017 graduates received degrees and diplomas. Among the graduates was, 23-year-old Natalie Rodriguez, who is deaf, and who is the first person in her family to graduate from high school and college. She received an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Medical Office Administration.
In spring 2018, more than 1,700 students received degrees and diplomas. Dr. Stephen C. Scott offered advice to the 2018 graduates as he presided over the college’s commencement exercises for a final time. “What can you do to be a better student, employee, parent, and friend? I challenge you to put into action what you have learned at Wake Tech to improve your life and the lives of your family and community.”

Outreach and Partnerships
The spotlight was on workforce training, as Governor Roy Cooper visited Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus. Governor Cooper said a well-trained workforce is the state’s top recruiting tool to lure companies here. “We are in a constant race with innovation to make sure we keep our workforce at the level that we need to attract these good-paying jobs,” Governor Cooper said. “We know that the job market is constantly changing and you here at Wake Tech are continuing to have to meet those changes with input from employers.” The governor took a tour of hands-on training in skilled trades, including plumbing, HVAC,
and welding. In the welding lab, student Sarah McClain demonstrated how the college is keeping up with advancing technology with new robotic welding equipment.
Nine locations, 200 programs, and a comprehensive array of services and resources – Wake Tech showcased all at its Annual Open House events over the past few weekends. Events were held at the Northern Wake Campus, the Southern Wake Campus, and the Perry Health Sciences Campus. Hundreds of local high school students and their parents, school guidance counselors, and professionals seeking career advancement came to learn about all the opportunities that Wake Tech offers and to tour those locations. Visitors also had the opportunity to talk with admissions advisors and career counselors, and get information about financial aid.
Wake Tech honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special service project focused on combating hunger. Students, faculty, and staff packaged 20,000 meals for distribution to schools and orphanages around the world. The event was coordinated by the international relief organization Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now). This service project has become an annual event for the college. Wake Tech has been partnering with Rise Against Hunger since 2009 and has packaged more than 124,000 meals.
The Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Carol Gabor for her tireless dedication to students. Through her patience and commitment, Gabor has encouraged and supported students in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language programs. She has helped them build self-confidence and self-esteem. During the last school year, Gabor donated 224 hours and earned the United States President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Wake Tech showcased student and alumni success
and the college’s impact on the community during a celebration at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel. More than 200 local leaders and influencers gathered to hear from students and community partners. Dr. Stephen Scott said the college’s ability to serve more than 72,000 students a year is a team effort. “The secret sauce at Wake Tech is the collaboration between the faculty, staff, trustees, and students and the support that you in the community give us. Wake Tech is a special place that truly changes lives.”
An open house at Wake Tech’s Beltline Education Center gave visitors a look at the college’s state-of-the-art training programs in cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, hospitality, biotechnology, and much more. The free event included tours, exhibits, and workshops highlighting Wake Tech’s non-credit Workforce Continuing Education programs: fast-track training, high school equivalency preparation, job search classes for the unemployed or underemployed, and a wide range of personal and professional enrichment courses. Attendees were able to test their skills in Wake Tech’s mobile public safety driving simulator, which is used to train law enforcement, fire fighters, and paramedics on safe driving skills. Barbering and cosmetology students offered free services throughout the event, and Wake Tech’s Advanced Manufacturing Center and robotics lab were open for tours.
At the Wake Tech’s annual Excellence Awards banquet on April 18, UNC REX Healthcare was named Corporate Benefactor of the Year. UNC REX has supported the college for more than 20 years through student scholarships, equipment, and faculty. UNC REX created an endowment to support the professional development needs of health sciences faculty. The most recent investment of $100,000 broadens the impact of scholarships to serve Imaging, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, and Pharmacy Technology students and reinforces a long-standing commitment to the training and professional development of faculty members. UNC REX also provides more than $500,000 worth of clinical support each year.
The Individual Spirit of Giving award was given to the former chair of the Wake Tech Board of Trustees, Harvey Montague, Sr. Montague served on the Board from 1996 to 2016. During that time, he offered extensive knowledge as a building and land developer to assist Wake Tech in developing new campuses, renovating buildings, and purchasing new land. In addition to sharing his time and talent, Montague made significant gifts to support student scholarships. A building on the Southern Wake Campus is named in his honor. He also played a pivotal role in securing a $1 million gift for the nursing. The donation will support student scholarships, faculty fellowships, professional development, and much-needed equipment
and technology.

Sponsored Programs and Federal Relations
Sponsored Programs partners with leaders across the college to raise funds in the form of grants and appropriations from federal, state, and local governments as well as foundations to foster innovation and address unmet needs of the college. The Sponsored Programs team also provides grant management and compliance support to ensure the college achieves maximum impact from sponsored programs in support of student success. Wake Tech was awarded more than $8 million in grants and appropriations in 2017-18, with 18 of its 31 submitted competitive grant proposals receiving funding, and four submittals pending.

Wake Tech Celebrates the
Legacy of Dr. Stephen Scott
It was a day to remember for Dr. Stephen Scott. Business, government, and community leaders joined more than 1,000 current and former employees in celebrating Dr. Scott’s tenure at Wake Tech. Dr. Scott retired at the end of August after serving for 15-years as the college’s third president.
“This is a bittersweet day,” said Executive Vice President Dr. Gayle Greene. “Dr. Scott has been a mentor and an inspiration to Wake Tech employees, and we will miss him.”
One by one and in groups, employees paid tribute, thanking him for his leadership and service. In a surprise announcement, Trustees Chair Tom Looney announced that the Board had voted to name the Northern Wake Campus in his honor. “This campus will now be known as the Stephen C. Scott Northern Wake Campus,” he said. College leaders presented Dr. Scott with a portrait by local artist William Branson, which will be hung in the Northern Wake Campus library.
Elected officials presented Dr. Scott with several recognitions and Mayor Nancy McFarlane presented Dr. Scott with a proclamation from the City of Raleigh. “It is my honor as the mayor and as the mother of a daughter who graduated from Wake Tech to declare August 14, 2018 Dr. Stephen C. Scott Day!”
The Wake Tech Foundation announced that it has received a $1 million dollar donation for a new endowment called the Dr. Stephen Scott Applied Benchmarking Fund. Applied Benchmarking is a continuous improvement initiative created by Dr. Scott to encourage employees to look for best practices and apply them at Wake Tech.
Employees received wristbands with the acronym WWDSD – which Jessica Holmes, Chair, Wake County Commissioners, suggested could serve as a reminder for employees when faced with challenges in the future. She said they could ask themselves, “What would Dr. Scott do?”
Employees also received a bottle of barbeque sauce courtesy of the Wake Tech Board of Trustees. The BBQ sauce was supplied by The Pit restaurant and sponsored by Chad Price and Mako Medical Laboratories. Dr. Scott had long referred to Wake Tech employees and supporters as Wake Tech’s “secret sauce.”
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Scott has been at the helm of Wake Tech since October 2003. Under his leadership, Wake Tech has become the largest of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges, now serving more than 74,000 students (the equivalent of one in 10 Wake County adults).

The Wake Tech Foundation partners with private entities and individuals to raise awareness, financial resources, and other assets to support the mission of Wake Technical Community College. The Foundation is committed to preserving and enhancing the resources with which it is entrusted through accuracy, transparency, and good stewardship. It provides opportunities for the professional development of faculty and staff and supports student achievement through scholarships and other forms of assistance.
