Job Description

Massage Therapists provide manual soft tissue manipulation to promote and maintain wellness or treat alterations in health. 

A person in this career:

  • Applies finger and hand pressure to specific points of the body
  • Assesses clients’ soft tissue condition, joint quality and function, muscle strength, and range of motion
  • Confers with clients about their medical histories and any problems with stress or pain in order to determine whether massage therapy would be helpful>
  • Develops and proposes client treatment plans that specify which types of massage are to be used
  • Massages and kneads the muscles and soft tissues of the body in order to provide courses of treatment for medical conditions and injuries or wellness maintenance
  • Consults with other health care professionals such as physical therapists, chiropractors, physicians and psychologists in order to develop treatment plan
  • Maintains treatment records
  • Provides clients with information about techniques for improving posture, stretching, strengthening, and relaxation
  • Uses complementary therapies such as heat, cold and movement to promote clients’ recovery, relaxation and well-being
  • Treats clients in own offices, or travels to clients’ offices and homes, or as part of complimentary team in a health care office 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Handle loads of up to 20 lbs., sometimes up to 50 lbs.  You might do a lot of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling
  • Work in this occupation involves using your hands to hold, control, and feel objects more than one-third of the time
  • Work in this occupation involves standing more than one-third of the time
  • Work in this occupation involves making repetitive motions more than one-third of the time
  • Work in this occupation requires being inside most of the time
